The Altamira caves are made famous by the ancient wall paintings of wild animals and human hands inside. Perhaps unsurprisingly the caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site in their position near the town of Santillana del Mar. The caves were uncovered by a landslide in the region in the lead up to 1879 allowing an anthropologist to find his way in and see what had gone many years before.
