Monfrague National ParkMonfrague National Park

Comprising 17,000 hectares of natural parkland, this national park has wide-ranging terrain and is inhabited by numerous forms of wildlife. The park is well-known for its black vultures in particular while it is also home to the Spanish Imperial Eagle, black storks and the Iberian lynx. There are also various other animals and birds that will fascinate visitors for hours. Monfrague became a natural park in 1979 and was then upgraded to the status of national park by 2007.

 

MeridaMerida

If travelling round Extremadura visitors would do well to spend some time looking around the historic city of Merida. Since 1993 Merida has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its impressive Roman structures. There is an amphitheatre which still hosts plays today, a five mile aqueduct and an arched bridge over the Guadiana River.

 

CaceresCaceres

Like regional capital Merida, Caceres is also home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In its old quarter it has walls interspersed with 10 towers and other medieval buildings. Caceres is a picturesque place to visit and has numerous monuments to explore and visit.

The Monastery in Guadalupe is truly impressive. It is another of Spain’s many UNESCO World Heritage Sites and contains the statue of the Virgin Mary which led to the formation of the building in this specific place.
